The St. Louis Cardinals announced that manager Mike Matheny was relieved of his duties on September 26, 2017 and will be replaced by bench coach Oliver Marmol for the remainder of the season

Oliver Marmol is the new manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Marmol, who is of Mexican descent, was a first-time manager and has been with the team for two seasons as bench coach.

Oliver “Oli” Marmol has been named the next manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.

For the previous two seasons, Marmol has served as the Cardinals’ bench coach. From the outset of the hunt, he was the favorite, and since being picked by St. Louis in 2007, he has worked his way up the ranks with the club.

Marmol, who is 35 years old, becomes the youngest active manager in Major League Baseball and the youngest manager to lead any club on Opening Day since Eric Wedge, who managed Cleveland in 2003 at the age of 35. He’ll be the Cardinals’ youngest manager since Marty Marion, who took over at the age of 34 in 1951, and he’ll be younger than eight of the team’s players, including Yadier Molina (39) and Adam Wainwright (31). (40).

“Oli seemed like he was on his way to being a big league manager at some time. I didn’t anticipate it would be 2022, for example “The Cardinals’ president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, acknowledged as much.

Marmol succeeds Mike Shildt, who was dismissed earlier this month after the Cardinals’ postseason defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers, despite a team-record 17-game winning run that led to a wild-card spot.

At the time, Mozeliak claimed “philosophical disagreements” as the reason for Shildt’s departure. He wouldn’t go into detail about the discrepancies, stating only that the move was “something that came up lately.”

He said that Shildt’s contract was coming to an end, but it wasn’t the only cause for their split. After the 2019 season, Shildt signed a three-year deal.

Following Shildt’s dismissal, Mozeliak debated whether he should leave the company or remain. He chose Marmol because he wanted consistency and knew he could rely on him to build on what he had learnt from mentors like Shildt.

“Oli will be able to speak for himself. He’ll be able to put his own stamp on it “According to Mozeliak. “In the end, you hope and anticipate that he learnt to do things his own way, one that he is comfortable with.”

On his first official day in his new capacity, Marmol hit some of baseball’s most popular notes. Marmol outlined a collaborative approach involving departments throughout the business when asked about the contemporary manager.

“There’s simply so much information available that can be exploited, and working together with the front office and analytics enables you to receive feedback on whether the choices you’re making are sustainable over 162 (games),” he added.

Marmol said he spoke with Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr., Mozeliak, and general manager Mike Girsch about their expectations for the role, which resulted in “total clarity.”

Marmol discussed the position with his wife, Amber, and they were both enthusiastic about the possibility. Marmol, on the other hand, admitted to having conflicting feelings about his connection with Shildt.

“It was fantastic to be able to have that chat with Mike and gain his support for bringing this business forward after everything was cleaned up and we came to terms,” he added.

Marmol, who grew up in New Jersey and has Dominican ancestors, takes over as the Cardinals’ second minority manager. Mike Gonzalez, a Cuban native, was the team’s manager for portions of the 1938 and 1940 seasons.

“Some of the early places we lived in… these chances don’t come across the table for the majority of folks who grew up in those neighborhoods,” Marmol added. “It’s really significant for children to be able to identify and see someone of color in a position of leadership, particularly for a successful organization like the St. Louis Cardinals.”

Marmol was drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 amateur draft out of the College of Charleston, and he played minor league baseball for a short time. He was appointed the Cardinals’ first-base coach in 2017 after coaching and managing in the minors, before taking over as bench coach in 2019.

After finishing second in the NL Central behind Milwaukee, Marmol inherits a team that intends to compete again. Wainwright and Molina have long-term contracts, and important hitters Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado are anticipated to help anchor the order next season.

“The aim is to win a championship, and anything less is a disappointment,” Marmol remarked. “This year, 2022, is no exception.”

Jesse Rogers, an ESPN staff writer, and the Associated Press contributed to this story.

The “st louis cardinals baseball” has hired Oliver Marmol as the new manager. He will be replacing Mike Matheny, who was fired at the end of last season.
