People are a lot more likely to get frustrated when they’re stuck in a rut, and the same is true for many of the most popular games. What can developers do to make sure that players have a better time?
It’s Human Nature to Get Frustrated is a book by Robert Sapolsky. In this chapter, he talks about the laws of human nature and how they apply to our everyday lives.
Terry McLaurin, a wide receiver with the Washington Football Team, is in his third season in the NFL and has caught 160 receptions thus far. What’s more remarkable is that he did it with ten quarterback changes, three of which occurred during his first season. So, on average, since joining the league, McLaurin has received passes from a new starting quarterback every three games. And this has led many to believe that McLaurin is one of the league’s most underappreciated wide receivers.
Since 2018, Washington has gone through a quarterback rotation.

Since then, the starting quarterback has changed 12 times, beginning with Alex Smith’s horrific leg injury, which was eerily identical to that of former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann, who, ironically, shattered his leg 33 years ago today and was in the audience seeing Smith go down. Following Smith, Colt McCoy made two starts before suffering a season-ending leg injury. Then, after starting one game but being benched at halfway, Josh Johnson took over for the last three games of the season.
Case Keenum started the first four games of the 2019 season, but was benched in Week 4. Keenum returned for three games before departing with a concussion in Week 8. McCoy began Week 5 and Keenum returned for three games before leaving with a concussion in Week 8. Haskins returned to the starting lineup in Week 9 and remained the starter until he was injured in Week 16 and Keenum returned to complete the season.
Things were no less tumultuous in 2020. Weeks 1-4 were begun by Haskins, Weeks 5-9 by Kyle Allen, and Weeks 10-14 were started by Smith. Then, in Weeks 15 and 16, Haskins took over, and Smith completed the season.
Ryan Fitzpatrick began the first game of the season in 2021, however he was forced to leave in the second quarter due to a hip injury. Taylor Heinicke has taken over as the starter.
Terry McLaurin acknowledges it’s “difficult,” but says there’s “no justification.”

The frequent quarterback changes, as you would expect, are tough for the whole squad, especially the offense. According to WTOP News, McLaurin has addressed the difficulties of preserving chemistry and consistency with various quarterbacks. But the wide receiver isn’t making excuses, and he’s determined to be the greatest player he can be so that his teammates can rely on him. He elaborated:
“It’s human nature to get irritated from time to time. But, in the end, the first thing that comes to mind is that you have no excuses. I try to prepare that way, play that way, and make sure that whichever quarterback is on the field, they can believe that No. 17 will get the job done and that they can count on him.”
Fans believe that he is an underappreciated receiver who deserves better.
McLaurin isn’t the only one who thinks he’s underappreciated by analysts and media. Fans feel the same way. Fans believe McLaurin deserves more, as shown by a tweet noting the quarterback changes he has had to adjust to.
“This is why it’s ridiculous to me that people act like he’s not on dk’s level because dk has the top 3 qb situation in the whole league, McLaurin has had the worst by far, and their stats are nearly the same,” one person said, referring to Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf.
“And still balls out no matter who the QB is, just get the guy the ball!” another person observed.
Fans of the Redskins are hopeful that Heinicke can put an end to the quarterback rotation and give McLaurin an opportunity to flourish. “The child deserves better,” as one Twitter user put it.
