Durant has been selected the Male Athlete of the Year for USA Basketball in 2021. The two-time Finals MVP earned his third gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics this past summer and holds eight Olympic men’s career records, including the most points (435).
“It’s incredible to be recognized in this manner,” Durant added. “To begin with, it’s an honor to represent your nation and do so among the top athletes in the world. Because there are so many excellent players that come through USA Basketball and the national teams in general in all sports, being named one of the best is an honor. I’m appreciative for the chance and honored to earn this recognition.”
Jordan was a two-time winner of this award, in 1983 and 1984. LeBron James, on the other hand, won it in 2012. While Durant is well aware that NBA accolades carry more weight than Olympic medals, he should be proud of the fact that he has been named USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year for the third time.

Durant has received this award three times, in 2010 and 2016, as well as in 2021. In 2016, he shared the award with Carmelo Anthony. The Nets star is one of just four male basketball players to have competed in three or more Olympics, and he has led the United States in scoring in each of his three visits.

LeBron and Jordan have a combined total of four gold medals and three Male Athlete of the Year awards from USA Basketball. Durant has three gold medals and three Male Athlete of the Year awards from USA Basketball. In the Olympic GOAT rankings, he has clearly overtaken LBJ and His Airness, but he still has work to do in the NBA.
More championships, MVPs, and Finals MVPs are needed for KD.

One day, Durant will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He has won one regular-season MVP, four scoring crowns, two championships, and two Finals MVPs in his career, averaging 27.1 points per game.
However, he doesn’t have the same resume as LeBron or Jordan, at least not yet. LeBron James is a four-time MVP, four-time champion, and four-time Finals MVP, as well as the only player in NBA history to rank in the top-10 in both points and assists.
