Apple released a new version of the AirPods Pro firmware today. This update is recommended for all users and will improve battery life, connectivity, and performance.
The update airpods pro firmware is the newest version of the AirPods Pro Firmware. This update will fix some bugs and provide better performance for all users.
When I updated the firmware on my Aipods Pro, which are my current and long-time favorite wireless earbuds, I was blown away by how much has changed to bring them up to a much better level, both in terms of audio and usability.
So, how does the AirPods Pro respond to the 2D15 firmware update? The AirPods Pro’s Active Noise Cancellation has greatly improved, and it can now successfully filter out not just lower hums of noise (as in earlier software updates), but also higher pitched noises. The audio quality has increased, resulting in a more spatially accurate and reliable wireless connection.
I had to hurry to my laptop as soon as I saw my AirPods Pro had been upgraded to the newest version so you could be notified of this significant improvement straight immediately. Continue reading to learn more about this upgrade, including how to update the firmware on your AirPods Pro.
AirPods Pro Firmware Versions in the Past
It wouldn’t be fair to discuss how the latest firmware update has improved the AirPods Pro without first comparing it to the two versions that came before it:
After numerous customer concerns that the AirPods Pro’s newest function, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), was not powerful enough to filter out many outside sounds, Apple engineers issued this upgrade in November of 2019.
This was an upgrade to the 2B584 firmware that came with the AirPods Pro straight out of the box when they were initially released.
During this time, I, like with millions of other customers, had the AirPods Pro. And, to to our disappointment, the firmware upgrade to 2B588 did not go far enough to let the Pro’s ANC reach its full potential.
As a result, only weeks following the initial iteration’s popular reception, the engineers created yet another firmware upgrade…
2C54, the quiet variant that slipped through the cracks. This version was initially meant to address all of the flaws that the previous one revealed, including a clear look at the absence of Active Noise Cancellation. It was pushed by Apple engineers just weeks after the disappointing 2B588 firmware upgrade.
Let’s just say they disagreed over the firmware upgrade. Why? Because they enhanced the sound profile of the wireless earbuds (something no one expected to happen), but did not address any noise cancelling issues. Some customers even claimed that the upgrade to 2C54 made the AirPods Pro’s ANC worse than the update to 2B588. Wow.
Thankfully, Apple seems to be continually listening to user criticism, since the 2C54 software upgrade was removed from the AirPods Pro in January 2020, and the more current version was discontinued entirely. Many Pros were reverted to the previous version, 2B588.
I kept checking to see whether my AirPods had updated to 2C54 throughout this time of version upgrades and changes, but they never did. Because Apple recalled the update so quickly, this was a frequent occurrence for many people.
What Has Changed in the Firmware Update for the 2D15?
After what felt like an eternity, the newest 2D15 firmware version for the AirPods Pro has finally arrived, many months after the rolled back 2B588 upgrade.
So, what’s different now? And why was I so eager to get here and submit this essay as soon as possible?
Because Apple finally enhanced the AirPods Pro’s Active Noise Cancellation. Vastly!
Previously, the AirPods Pro could only muffle lower hums of noise (think heating/air conditioning systems and aircraft engines), but 2D15 has improved the Pros to successfully block these noises, as well as those that range into the mid to upper frequencies. Nice!
This latest software update enables the AirPods Pro to drown out outside voices, television sounds, and the rest of everyday house life, which is especially useful during this time of year when we may be spending more time in our homes with friends and family. We can now concentrate even more on our job (or gaming) with fewer distractions.
But wait, they didn’t stop there!
The sound profile has also been enhanced, similar to the quiet fast 2C54 upgrade but much better. I’m listening to music on mine right now, and I can only describe the new sound profile as more full, similar to my over-ear favorites, with punchier mids and an increase in spatial audio (producing a more vivid surround sound and a less bland stereo tone), which is a really welcome improvement.
The Bluetooth connection between the AirPods Pro, my MacBook Pro, and my iPhone has also been strengthened, at least in my case. Before, it wasn’t necessarily terrible. However, after many hours of listening, while there used to be an occasional *burble* sound or skip, it has been removed with the 2D15 firmware upgrade.
How to Update AirPods Pro to Firmware Version 2D15
Apple does not inform you that a firmware update for the AirPods Pro is ready, unlike a conventional iPhone iOS update. Instead, you’ll have to look for them to see whether they’ve been updated automatically. Here’s how to do it:
- Tap Setting > General > About after pairing your AirPods Pro with your iPhone.
- You should now see a list with information such as the current software version, model number, and serial number for your iPhone.
- Scroll down until you find the name of your AirPods Pro on this list.
- When you tap on the name of your AirPods Pro, you should see the current software version, which should be 2D15 (the latest version)
If your AirPods Pro haven’t been upgraded to 2D15 after completing the instructions above, here are some suggestions to ensure that they are:
- Make sure your iPhone is running the most recent version of iOS.
- If you usually keep your AirPods Pro outside the case, check sure they’re both charged and the case’s clam shell is closed.
- Overnight, leave both your AirPods Pro and iPhone on a charger (plugged in or wireless) and close to each other.
- After waiting overnight, repeat steps 1-4 to see whether the firmware has been successfully updated.
After following these procedures and double-checking the current firmware version, it should only take an overnight for your AirPods Pro to be updated as well. If it still isn’t working after all of this, wait a few more nights after going through these procedures, or contact Apple Support for help.
