5G is the next big thing in wireless technology. It will bring faster speeds, better reliability and lower latency to mobile devices. But while many people are excited about 5G’s potential, it’s still unclear what its impact will be on the broader economy.
5G technology is beginning to expand beyond smartphones. The new technology will be used in a variety of devices such as laptops, tablets, and more.
The introduction of ultrafast 5G networks is expected to usher in a new age for a wide range of applications, from improved virtual-reality gaming to remote heart surgery. That ambition has taken a while to materialize, but a first wave of 5G-enabled devices is on the way.
The supply of home broadband internet service for the ultimate cord-cutters: individuals wanting to not only reduce their cable-TV costs but also their Internet connection through wires, is one of the first applications of 5G to reach the consumer market. For example, Samsung Electronics Co. has partnered with Verizon Communications Inc. to provide wireless 5G routers that guarantee at-home internet connectivity. The router receives 5G signals in the same way as a smartphone would.
5G-compatible laptops from a variety of manufacturers have begun to hit the market, all of which are quicker than previous laptops and provide higher-quality video watching when connected to a 5G network. (To establish that connection, laptops must have a 5G chip.)

In August, Lenovo Group Ltd. partnered with AT&T Inc. to introduce the ThinkPad X13 5G, a 5G notebook. The gadget, which went on sale last month and costs about $1,500, has a 13.3-inch screen. Samsung also unveiled a new laptop with 5G connectivity in June. The Samsung Galaxy Book Go 5G features a 14-inch display and costs about $800.
But what if you want a 5G connection on your boat, which is thousands of kilometers away? You’ve come to the right place. Meridian 5G, a Monaco-based supplier of superyacht internet services, is advertising a 5G Dome Router, a combination of antennae and modems that enables yachts cruising within 60 miles of the shore to receive 5G connection. For an average-sized superyacht, the gear costs upwards of $17,000.
For 5G connection offshore, a boat with the Meridian 5G Dome Router.
Musashi, a motoryacht.
Of course, all of these devices are only usable in areas where 5G networks are accessible, which is only a small percentage of the population, onshore and offshore. This is also true with Qualcomm Inc. QCOM 0.36 percent’s latest drone technology, which includes 5G and artificial-intelligence capabilities. According to Qualcomm, the Qualcomm Flight RB5 5G Platform allows higher-quality picture and video gathering.
According to Qualcomm, drones outfitted with 5G technology may be utilized in a variety of sectors, including filmmaking, mapping, and emergency services such as firefighting. Drones, for example, may be used to survey vast amounts of land and quickly transmit data for analysis and processing thanks to improved camera technology provided by 5G.
Proponents of 5G technology have long claimed that it will transform much of daily life, advancing the so-called Internet of Things to the point where nearly any device you can think of—home and office appliances, industrial equipment, hospital equipment, vehicles, and so on—will be connected to the internet and exchanging data with the cloud at speeds that will enable new capabilities.
“The objective of 5G, once we have a mature 5G network worldwide,” Qualcomm Chief Executive Officer Cristiano Amon said at a conference last month in Germany, “is to guarantee that everything is linked to the cloud 100 percent of the time.”
Analysts predict that the broad adoption of 5G gadgets will take years as network coverage increases and markets for all those sophisticated new goods materialize.
