Even though Raspberry Pi devices are not very costly, they may represent a significant part of some of our budgets. Finding methods to cut the initial cost, or at the very least generate some money with it in the first month, might help you decide whether or not to acquire one. There’s no reason not to put them to work for you if, like me, you keep them running all the time. What is the best way to achieve this? This post will show you how to generate money with your Raspberry Pi in a few different ways.
A Raspberry Pi is a small computer with resources that may be used to earn money. The most common technique is to share CPU power (for crypto-mining), excess storage, or, better yet, underutilized bandwidth.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the theory behind each technique and show you how to implement it on your Raspberry Pi at home. If you want to generate a few bucks per month by just keeping your Raspberry Pi running, keep reading.
If you want to get started with the Raspberry Pi fast, check out my e-book. It’s a 30-day challenge in which you learn something new every day until you’ve mastered the Raspberry Pi. The first third of the book covers the fundamentals, but the latter chapters feature tasks that you may do on your own.
3 – Crypto-mining: generate money with the Raspberry Pi’s CPU.
The Pi Glossary is available for download. If you’re confused by all the new terms and acronyms, get my free Raspberry Pi dictionary (PDF format)!
Setting up crypto mining on your Rasberry Pi is one of the most common methods to attempt to generate money passively with it. It isn’t the ideal solution, but let’s speak about it for a minute.
Theory
The majority of cryptocurrencies operate in the same manner. The transactions are supported by a network, and anybody may host a node on a computer to assist the organization. The node’s owners are usually paid with cryptocurrency tokens in exchange. Crypto-mining is what we call it.
In other words, the more strong your node is, the more likely you are to get rewarded. So, you’re up against regular computers, and you need to defeat them by utilizing a high-end CPU and/or GPU to win more cash. To learn more about how it works, watch this brief video:
Today’s Raspberry Pi Bootcamp Sale is 10% off. Take it a step farther. I’m here to assist you in getting started with the Raspberry Pi. Learn all of the necessary abilities in the proper sequence.
As you may know, this is no longer a way for a few geeks at home to earn some extra cash. This consumption is partly responsible for the present global GPU storage. Powerful nodes are built with the most costly graphics cards.
A Raspberry Pi has a slim chance of winning this tournament. However, you may still test some less-well-known cryptos to see if you can make any money. At the very least, you’ll get some experience and a better understanding of how everything works. As a result, I chose to keep it in this post.
Putting this approach to the test
It’s no longer difficult to mine cryptocurrency using a Raspberry Pi. However, there are a few processes that may be unfamiliar to you, so keep reading to find out more.
In a nutshell, you’ll require:
- A Raspberry Pi: the better the model, the better the outcomes. So, if at all feasible, utilize a Raspberry Pi 4. (or at least one supporting 64-bit).
- A 64-bit operating system is required for the software to function properly.
- To receive and keep your DOGE money, you’ll need a DOGE address.
- A miner is the program that does the job for you.
- A mining pool is the network to which your miner will be linked.
I recently tried mining Dogecoin as a solution. UnMineable allows you to establish a Dogecoin address and search for a pool. Then you’ll install XMRig, a free miner, and configure it to join to this pool.
I realize that it may seem difficult at first, which is why I created a comprehensive guide on how to mine Dogecoins using a Raspberry Pi. If you want to give it a try, I suggest reading it since I describe all the processes in depth (including the system setup). You can also see me perform it on my Raspberry Pi in the video at the bottom.
It isn’t the most rewarding way, as I already said. It will take a few months to obtain anything, but it is worthwhile to attempt it at least once to have a better understanding of the sector.
2 – Rent out your Raspberry Pi’s unused storage.
If sharing CPU power isn’t a good match for a Raspberry Pi, sharing unused disk storage seems to be a better fit. One TB on a PC and one TB on a Raspberry Pi are the same thing.
Theory
For their clients, several businesses are developing decentralized cloud storage. Cloud has become a catchphrase that has lost some of its meaning. Even if your files are stored “in the cloud,” on the same server or in the same data center, there are still certain hazards (believe me, I lost my Nextcloud server in a data center fire last year).
The goal behind decentralized cloud storage is to store your information securely on several computers across the globe, all of which are encrypted and redundant. Here’s a brief video from STORJ that explains everything:
Putting this approach to the test
STORJ provides a simple way to set up a node on your PC or Raspberry Pi. It will utilize your available disk space and bandwidth in this manner, and you will be compensated for it.
In only 30 days, you’ll have mastered the Raspberry Pi. Today’s sale is 10% off. Get the eBook here. In a 30-day challenge, uncover the mysteries of the Raspberry Pi. Learn important Linux skills and put them to work on a variety of projects.
Payouts will vary significantly based on your internet connection, storage, and their requirements. However, using this strategy, you may still expect to earn a few bucks per month, making it much superior than crypto-mining.
There are four stages to hosting a node with STORJ:
- Create your auth token: this will be your identification for being paid, and it will be based on your email address.
- Create a node identity: do the same thing for each Raspberry Pi you use.
- Configure port forwarding: Because STORJ requires Internet connectivity to your node, port forwarding must be established before proceeding.
- Set up your node as follows: Finally, you may download the app and begin earning money by hosting files on your device.
Before you do anything further, I strongly advise you to connect your Raspberry Pi to external storage. Because the more disk space you have, the more money you’ll make, utilizing a SATA extension board (like this one on Amazon) is a fantastic option. Another alternative is to connect this kind of external disk through USB, which is more convenient.
After you’ve set up the Raspberry Pi, go to the STORJ website for further information on how to host a node with them. It’s not that difficult since the node runs on docker. All you have to do now is carefully follow each step to guarantee you don’t forget anything.
1 – The best option is to monetize your unused bandwidth by selling it.
Take a look at my cheat sheet! Get your free PDF file with all the Raspberry Pi instructions you’ll ever need!
Selling your bandwidth is the greatest and simplest method I’ve discovered to generate money with a Raspberry Pi so far. It works with any model of Raspberry Pi and requires no modifications to your existing setup. It’s fantastic, particularly for my Raspberry Pi Zero, which is always on.
Theory
Some businesses are hunting for data on the internet from all over the globe. Here are a few examples provided by the solution I’ll provide shortly:
- What is the cost of a flight from London to New York purchased via a French user?
- What are the results of a search in Rome, Italy for “best bizza in town”?
- When accessing the website from India, what is the wording on certain Facebook ads?
Many businesses would want to see that type of outcome, but they can’t afford to run a server in each location to obtain it. That is why BrightData (and maybe others) provide a solution: they employ their global network of random people.
The plan for us is to use a Raspberry Pi and the BrightData software to register as a node on their network. The Raspberry Pi will then be utilized to perform web searches, and you will be compensated based on how much bandwidth they use.
It’s that easy, and it’s the answer that has allowed me to make the most money.
Putting this approach to the test
The only thing you’ll need is an Internet-connected Raspberry Pi. This was tested on a Raspberry Pi Zero running Raspberry Pi OS, but it should work on any model of Raspberry Pi and any Linux distribution. The steps to test this on your end are as follows:
- Create an account on their website by filling out the following form: Create a free account at EarnApp.com. You may easily sign up using your Google account.
- You’ll have access to your dashboard after you’ve connected, where you can see your current balance, devices, and use history. For the time being, everything is empty, therefore you must first set up your Raspberry Pi.
- On your Raspberry Pi, run the following command lines: wget -qO- https://brightdata.com/static/earnapp/install.sh > /tmp/earnapp.sh sudo bash /tmp/earnapp.sh A script will run and do everything for you. At the end, you should get something like the following:
- Click on the link to register the new node. It will then appear on your dashboard, like this:
You can rename it if you want (recommended if you set up several devices).
Today’s sale on Master Python on Raspberry Pi is 10% off. Get your hands on the eBook. Make the most of your Raspberry Pi by learning new ideas and using shortcuts. If you don’t know Python, you’ll lose out on half of the pleasure of using a Raspberry Pi.
That concludes our discussion. That’s all there is to it. EarnApp is now registered on your Raspberry Pi and will start immediately when it boots up. If you keep your Raspberry Pi turned on, you’ll be paid whenever the network requires Internet connection from your location.
The findings will appear on your dashboard within a few hours:
In the top-left corner, you’ll see your overall profits, and on the right, you’ll see your use history day by day, as well as which node contributed to the results in the devices area.
After a few weeks of testing, I’ve come up with the following findings, which were primarily achieved on my Raspberry Pi Zero. I tried connecting numerous devices to the same network, but it wasn’t worth it. You’ll get better results if you can run another Raspberry Pi in a separate place (mobile network, maybe at work or utilizing the neighbor’s Wi-Fi). As you can see on their web page, the profits differ based on your country.
It’s quite intriguing to get $5 to $15 each month from a Raspberry Pi Zero that costs $15 and takes a few minutes to set up:-). If you want to give it a go, go to EarnApp.com right now and follow the steps to start generating money with their service right now.
You may redeem your amount starting at $2.5, thus it pays off quickly compared to crypto mining, plus it’s real money:
To earn even more, install the program on your additional computers, tablets, and cellphones (especially if you are not using them from the same network).
